A Monmouth man was jailed for three years at Newport Crown Court last Tuesday for committing a serious firearms' offence in the town.

Andrew Alexander, 42, of Carbonne Close, Monmouth, had admitted possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear.

The court heard how police officers went to his flat in Monmouth to speak to him about an entirely unrelated matter.

But suddenly he produced an air rifle and held the officers at bay. An Armed Response Group was called out and went to the scene.

The incident lasted 45 minutes before Alexander gave himself up.
