SIR,

On 8th October a letter signed by more than 100 people called for the safeguarding of people's homes in response to flooding.

The good news is that Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) has taken steps to address some of the concerns.

Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay has kindly informed me that he has received the following from MCC.

"We have met with Melin Housing Association. We have increased the number of cuts of the wildlife corridor from two to four.

"We have spot sprayed the bulrushes in an attempt to clear them. We have mended the grid and are arranging for the winch mechanism to be placed further back.

"The ditch adjoining the corridor has been cleared. We have commissioned a study by Martin Wright Associates to check the amount of rainfall in the catchment with pipe sizes.

"Some riparian owners are being served notice to clear their section of watercourse."

The study by Martin Wright Associates is welcomed. However, the last couple of months have demonstrated that Monmouth demands change.

This is clearly a challenging time. Issues such as flooding, ambulatory care and CCTV demand us to act as a community and demand real change.
