SIR, We should like to take this opportunity to inform your readers by way of an update regarding the story surrounding the proposal to build affordable homes at Mitchel Troy Common, which was the subject of much discussion following coverage in your January edition. Finding opportunities to satisfy local need for affordable housing amongst our rural communities continues to be a priority for Monmouthshire County Council. That said, any progress or development is subject to strict planning criteria as well as up to date evidence to assess if the actual local demand is indeed real. The situation for Mitchel Troy Common is as follows: The planning application that was submitted in January which gave rise to the initial concern was withdrawn some time ago. The newly adopted Local Development Plan for Monmouthshire makes provision for an affordable housing opportunity at Dingestow. Prior to any progress on the Dingestow site there will be extensive consultation to assess the numbers of eligible individuals. Only if and when this project has been started and only if there is evidence of excess need for the affordable homes will other sites within the community council area be considered. This may include sites in Mitchel Troy Common, but as this would mean a departure from planning policy all other sites in Dingestow and Mitchel Troy would have to be ruled out first. If affordable housing ever comes to Mitchel Troy Common it would be as a result of careful and considered planning and with engagement of all stakeholders, neighbours etc. to ensure that any development, whilst providing new homes for local people, would also address many of the lasting local concerns such as pathways, parking spaces etc. Affordable housing sensitively presented can be a rejuvenating opportunity for a rural community. We are sure that the affordable housing in Dingestow will have this effect and benefit residents from the wider community. Councillor Geoff Burrows (Monmouthshire County Council)
