A Chepstow man has been arrested today (12th August) after Gwent Police began monitoring social networking sites in light of this week's rioting across the UK.

The 25-year-old was arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a public order offence.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

This is one of five arrests made in the Gwent Police area.

A 31-year-old man from Newport, a 20-year-old man from Newport, and a 26-year-old man from Ebbw Vale have also been arrested on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of a public order offence.

The 31-year-old has been released on bail pending further enquiries. The 26-year-old and 20-year-old remain in police custody being questioned.

A 27-year-old man from Ebbw Vale was arrested and cautioned for sending a malicious communication via a public communication network.

While there has been no unrest in Gwent like that seen in some UK cities, people are still being urged to act responsibly.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We continue to urge members of the community to use social media responsibly and be careful not to add to the huge amount of rumour that has, inevitably, arisen."

Anyone who has any concerns can speak to our officers who are on patrol or can call 101.
