ST MARY’S Street is closed for approximately two days while a section of the road is being dug up for gas main and highway maintenance repair works.

Business owner of the Malthouse cafe, Kate Launder expressed her frustration after the works are being followed out directly outside her cafe on one of the hottest days of the year at 31 degrees.

“We are definitely closed today because of the noise and the dust and unfortunately because of the weather we need the doors open,” said Kate.

“We have let the team know we are closed today and tomorrow we will have to wait and see. They’re going to fill the road in, and we will see what the noise is like.

“Very sorry to those who were planning to see us for brunch or lunch today or coffee and cake, but we will keep you updated on Facebook.

“It’s frustrating because we weren’t notified as a local business, even though the works are being done directly on the road outside the cafe.

“With the hot weather I’d assumed we would be quiet, but we had one of our busiest days of the year so far and I think we would have had a similar day today.

“I sent an email to MCC highways objecting the works being done this week because it’s half term and one of our busiest weeks of the year and they ignored my objections and went ahead anyway.”

Updates will be shared on the Malthouse Café Facebook and social media as the works continue for residents to stay informed.
