A 'Take Care of Yourself Day' event held at Bridges Community Centre last week (Saturday 7th June) was the first of its kind. The event for Monmouthshire parents and carers who are looking after children and young people with additional needs was organised by MAGIC, a county charity working for a better future for young people with additional needs. The day was an opportunity for parents and carers to meet up, have some tea, coffee and cake, pick up information about support for families, and to experience some relaxation activities. The event was supported by local relaxation practitioners including Sally Saint, who did some reiki and reflexology, Lorraine Owens who is also a reflexologist, and Annie Tyhurst who is Wales' only qualified practitioner in Guided Imagery and Music. MAGIC are very grateful to these professionals for giving their time to come to the event, and to Pets as Therapy who brought some of their therapy dogs. The group would also like to thank Clam's Cakes from Abergavenny, for providing cakes for the event. The event also included fun activities for children, including soft play, messy play, sensory den, Punch and Judy, balloon modelling, dancing, arts and crafts. MAGIC's Sandra Peebles said the event was a great way for parents and carers to have a little time for themselves while the children enjoy the play area. "We always struggle to get people to come to things when they have disabled kids and it's quite difficult to get out and about," she said. "There isn't that many activities they can do so we thought if we had an event which brought people together and get more involvement in the issues that we have, we can talk to people about the things we have to face and try to help them out and point them in the right direction."
