SIR,
I wonder if your readers can assist me with the mystery of the traffic lights on the B4521 between Skenfrith and Cross Ash?
These temporary lights first appeared in February. On my twice-daily journeys, I scrutinised the area carefully for any signs of activity but found none.
By mid-March I had concluded that the lights were there in order to use up a temporary traffic light budget before the end of the financial year. March and April came and went, and the lights remained.
Even more mysteriously, the generator was kept supplied and a faulty bulb replaced the same day. In May, more temporary traffic lights appeared, rapidly moving along the B4521, accompanied by workmen making repairs to the verges and drains. Sadly, my lonely lights were ignored by the workmen - along with the section of verge either side of them.
My appeals to these men were met only with a suggestion to contact the One-Stop Shop. This I did, but to no avail. These lonely lights continue to illuminate my daily journey to Hereford.
I wonder if your readers could offer any suggestions as to the purpose of these lights. Are they a traffic calming device? A spare parking space in case the capacious layby opposite is full? A haven for rare grasses only found on undisturbed tarmac?
Perhaps they are just a reminder to us all to slow down, and appreciate the lovely Monmouthshire countryside . If so, could we not have a reminder that does not consume fossil fuels?
Sally Jones
