YOUNGSTERS are putting their lives at risk by playing games in the Gibraltar Tunnels on the A40 dual carriageway, The Beacon has been told. Police officers in Monmouth are warning drivers to slow down and take extra care when passing through the Gibraltar Tunnels following reports received over the last couple of evenings of young children using them as a hang out spot. A police spokesman said on Tuesday: "Searches of the area were carried out in order to direct these children to safety but no one was found". Officers request that parents warn their children of the dangers of using this location as a hang out spot and ensure that they know where they are at all times. PC Stefan Williams said: "This is a huge concern for me as vehicles travel through the tunnels at about 50 mph including articulated lorries. "It could only take a small slip or trip and we could be faced with a tragic accident. I urge drivers to remain vigilant and parents to ensure their children understand the importance of road safety."
