SIR,
On Monday 4th June 2012, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated
An important part of the celebrations over that weekend will be the lighting of 2,012 beacons throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, the Commonwealth and the UK Overseas Territories.
The Queen herself will light one of the beacons, and all the beacon locations will be entered into a special presentation book that will be given to the Queen after the event, as a permanent reminder of this moment in history.
Community councils have been invited to register beacon locations, and some local people have already contacted Trellech United Community Council about lighting a beacon in the area – not least because one was lit in Trellech on the occasion of the Coronation.
The council is relatively unusual however, in that its members represent seven different villages, from Llanishen to Whitebrook, and people in each village might be interested in lighting their own beacon.
Councillors also felt the initiative for organising this should come from local grass-roots community groups, rather than from themselves.
So this letter is to make sure everyone is aware of the opportunity, and to see if there is any interest out there.
If any groups do want to take this forward, the community council might be willing to give some financial help.
The royal pageant master has produced a booklet called 'Your guide to taking part', which is available online at diamondjubileebeacons.co.uk
This includes details of how to construct a large beacon, and legal and safety advice, as well as a registration form.
If there is anyone out there who is interested in taking this on, then the community council will be delighted.
Ann Davison
(Clerk of Trellech United Community Council)
