Villagers from Llangybi were joined by Laura Anne Jones MS to commemorate VE day this week.

Ms Jones has marked the “special anniversary” of VE day with celebrations in across Monmouthshire.

On May 8, 1945, VE day marked the end to almost six years of conflict that had cost the lives of millions of people.

The Germans accepted unconditional surrender, with the announcement broadcast to the British public over the radio on May 7.

80 years on, communities across the UK continue to mark the day by holding street parties and taking part in other activities.

Ms Jones joined celebrations in Llangybi where she has lived, at the village hall where people in the community took part in a bake-off.

It is estimated that 300,000 Welsh soldiers fought across every theatre of war in World War 2.

Ms Jones was also praised by the Welsh Government’s Minister for mental health and wellbeing raising awareness with the female veteran's alliance for peer mental health support for veterans.

Laura Anne Jones MS, Senedd Member for south Wales East and Shadow Minister for Housing, local government and the armed forces, said:

“It was great to go back to one of the lovely Monmouthshire villages that I used to live in, Llangybi, yesterday and join them for their VE day celebration in their village hall.

“My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the tea party with homemade cakes, watching all about the war and VE day and seeing all the memorabilia on display. A massive thank you to everyone involved in organising the event.”

“I enjoyed having my 6-year-old with me, as it's so important that the younger generations understand what happened and the bravery of his great grandparents and many other across Wales and the UK that fought bravely to ensure that we could enjoy the freedoms we do today.”
