Two tries in the first five minutes with left wing Dewi Lane absolutely skinning his opposite number for a stunning second score raised hopes of a rout by Monmouth last Saturday (18th September), but only for a short while as Caldicot got a grip of themselves.

They began to return the pressure, maintaining the high -speed game that Monmouth had disconcerted them with from the off.

The home team preyed on Monmouth mistakes and despite their scorer being tackled he crashed over the line near the posts to narrow the gap to seven points to 12.

Monmouth retaliated straight from the kick-off by driving play back down to the home line, where they earned a penalty and opted for a scrum instead of a kick at goal.

But Caldicot were able to save the moment until 'lazy runners' were penalised and full back Rhys Ricketts extended the lead to seven-15.

Monmouth were still playing at a hectic pace and close inter-passing in a move on the left brought an interception by Caldicot of an attempted reverse pass, which was run in over 60 yards, helped by some missed tackles.
