MEMBERS of Monmouth Golf Club Ladies' Section held a 12 hole competition followed by lunch to mark the beginning of the new season on St David's Day.
It was a fresh, crisp morning with a magnificent blue sky above. Despite a biting wind many ladies played and several others joined them for an excellent lunch.
The Ladies' Secretary, Jackie Collinson, announced the names of the winners who were presented with their prizes by Ladies' Captain Anne Crocker. First was Jackie Davies, 2nd Ellie Peake and 3rd Janet Duffield.
A draw took place for one of the superb table decorations - a basket of spring flowers, including daffodils naturally, which was won by Joyce Harris.
Anne took the opportunity of the first gathering of the Ladies' Section this year to present prizes held over from last year. The Social Golf Cup, usually won by a mixed pairing, was on this occasion won by Myra Harper and Janet Duffield.
The LGU Silver and Bronze Medals for their performances in last year's medal competitions were presented to Sheilagh Pursey and Gerry Buckland respectively.
Jackie Davis has obviously hit early season form as she was also the winner of the first LGU Medal of the year, held in February.
The Club held its second Welsh Dinner on Saturday. After a splendid meal, for which Elaine Mathews, the Stewardess, must take great credit, the evening was given a wonderful start by the charming guest harpist Sophie Parmentor. The rendition of her repertoire of her music was wonderful and much appreciated by the attentive audience.
Following this splendid introduction to the evening the President, John Jones, presented the company with his memories of his boyhood in Ynysybwl. This proved to be a humorous and nostalgic stroll through Welsh life as it was and the audience's laughter spelt approval of the presentation.
The evening was concluded by the company dancing the night away to the Roger Whitehouse Experience before departing, tired but happy.
A wonderful evening to celebrate the birthday of the Patron Saint of Wales.
