Customers at Millbrook Garden Centre's popular tea room also had the opportunity to have their cars washed when they visited the Centre last Friday. And they did so in the knowledge that the money they paid was going to a good cause. Last year Kylie Bevis, who has worked in the Tea Room for the past three years, spent three months in Madagascar working for a charity called Azafady. During that time Kylie helped build a school, a latrine pit and a teacher's house, as well as showing residents how to grow vegetables. "I had a fantastic time - it was a life changing experience," she said. Kylie was therefore devastated when she heard that in April 365 people had lost their homes when a fire swept through a small town on the South East coast. "It was very upsetting because some of the people I'd met while I was working out there had become friends. " Anxious to do something to help, Kylie hit on the idea of a car wash, roping in her colleague Kate Mortimer, a friend and even a few regular customers. "I had a brilliant response when I did one last year to raise money to go to Madagascar" said Kylie. "Even a few hundred pounds goes a long way out there and the charity makes sure the money goes directly to help those who need it - it's not used up in administrative costs."
