Last SATURDAY's Welsh League encounter pitted table-topping campaigners Pontypridd Town against the division's top scorers. The result was a rip roaring, full-blooded match that was probably not for the purist, but was certainly one to remember.

Monmouth ripped into Ponty from the off, and never let up. Ponty played their full part in the spectacle, and at the end the two teams were trading blows like two drunks at closing time. The game could have gone one way or the other, but like the drunks, it ended in a crumpled heap of blood, sweat and beers.

Monmouth started by the far the brighter, and as early as the second minute, Bowen had a shot cleared off the line. With just minutes gone, Sam Palmer converted a fine move down the right to score his fourth goal in five games.

Pontypridd responded positively, and put together some moves that showed why they are title favourites, but for all the slickness, they didn't really penetrate a resolute back four marshalled superbly by Kennedy.
