KEN Hames, leader of Channel 4's Jungle Janes expedition, made his way to Monmouth to present long service awards to volunteers at the Cancer Research Campaign's Monmouth shop.

The man who led television's Jungle Janes on their Borneo expedition enjoyed a somewhat quieter mission to the Cancer Research shop.

He presented 12 volunteers with awards to mark five and 10 years' loyal service.

Ex-Army major Ken became a familiar face in January when the documentary series was shown on Channel 4.

It followed 12 women who had no previous experience of physically demanding expeditions, as they undertook a 24 day trek through the Borneo jungle.

Ken's wife Gwenda was one of the Jungle Janes and she accompanied him to the shop. She received £100 from a national magazine for telling her story and donated that to the Cancer Research Campaign.

Gwenda's mother Jo Parrott is a survivor of cancer and is a volunteer in the Agincourt Square shop. She received her five-year award.

Another two Jungle Janes, solicitor Sally Robbins and opera singer Susanna Spicer, were also on hand dressed in their jungle fatigues.

Shop manager Barbara Stocker said: "I am full of admiration for the Jungle Janes and all that they went through in Borneo.

"It is wonderful to meet them and their leader and I am very grateful to Jo Parrott for introducing us to them.

"Jo moved out of Monmouth last year, but still makes the journey back every week to help out in the shop.

"It is that type of dedication which makes all my volunteers so special and we are very pleased to be able to thank them publicly today.

"We are a happy team and I am always pleased to welcome more volunteers. Anyone who is interested should contact me on 01600 772876.

"Without the contribution made by our volunteers we would be unable to fund our vital research.

"More than one in three people will get cancer at some time in their lives, so very few of us will be unaffected by this disease."
