A SOLID performance by the Raglan forwards laid the foundations for the 28-10 Ivor Jones Cup victory over Monmouth 2nds. It was a typical cup tie and local Derby with plenty of full blooded commitment from both sides.

It was in the set piece that Raglan really had the advantage, dominating both scrum and line out and it was to the visitors' credit that they till managed to play some constructive rugby with only limited possession. This they managed by some defensive tackling and speed to the breakdown to win turnover ball.

Raglan played with the breeze in the first half and despite dominating the game territorially only managed one try from a charge down and pick up by wing Gwyn Bradley. Penalties were exchanged to make the half-time score 11-3.

With outside half Toby Smith playing his first game for two months it took a little time for the Raglan threequarters to settle but eventually some inroads were made when outside centre Matthew Walduck was put into space.

Then Raglan scored two tries from full back Ashley Jones who showed great pace and timing to enter the line and score near the posts. This double blow put the game out of Monmouth's reach but they rallied well and with excellent ball retention and a series of penalties were rewarded with a try.

With pride restored they continued to attack but Raglan captain Steve Ballinger broke from deep position and again Ashley Jones made ground before linking with Walduck who passed to wing Rob Arnett to cross for the final try.

All the tries were scored by the backs but it cannot be over emphasised that the basis of the win was the control exerted by the first five forwards.
