My friend Stan Coates, writing to The Beacon last week about the "petty mindedness" of the Town Council over the visit of a party from Japan and asking why "not one of them had the courage to stand up" against those who wished to keep alive hatreds going back 50 years, plainly had not read The Beacon. I was not the only councillor reported as welcoming the visit of our friends from Ishikawa-machi.
However, when the reception was held for the visitors on Monday evening, the organising committee sent no invitation to the Council inviting any councillors to attend. Consequently, I missed the party. I would have liked to have been there, to show my support.
