SIR,

I am concerned at recent activities on the section of Chippenham Mead village green, which lies between the dual carriageway and the River Wye.

That somewhat shadowy group which have taken it upon themselves to administer this part of our village green have been planting trees.

While their intentions may be laudable, their actions are in direct breach of the protective legislation which covers our village green, in particular Section 12 of the Inclosure Act 1857 and and Section 29 of the Commons Act 1876 and as such may be held to be unlawful.

I understand that they are now seeking funding for further tree planting – in particular an orchard – and wonder what our town and county councillors think about being asked to fund and/ or take part in such illegal activities.

Remembering past battles over Chippenham, I also wonder if there is anyone left in Monmouth who still cares.
