SIR,

I attended a 'yes' meeting in Abergavenny last week and came away wondering how on earth anyone who lives in Wales could possibly vote 'no' in the forthcoming referendum.

Powerful and logical support for the 'yes' campaign came from Conservative, Liberal-Democrat, Green, Plaid Cymru and Labour speakers.

The first on the platform was Nick Ramsay, our Conservative AM.

I have never voted Conservative in my life and cannot imagine that I ever will.

However, I was immensely impressed by this man's integrity, for he is willing to stand up and be counted for the good of Wales in this quite anglicised county.

How different in nature is our Monmouth MP David Davies.

David makes out to be a patriotic Welshman and, unlike many of us, has commendably succeeded in learning to speak our native language but that, it appears, is as far as it goes.

In my opinion there can be little doubt that David, whose Conservative support is pretty well guaranteed, is looking to gain extra votes from the sceptical and the anti-assembly faction, perhaps trusting that many people living on the border or who have migrated into Wales are ignorant of the Assembly's achievements?

I find it sad that David should squander the chance to do something constructive for Wales by rather selfishly pandering to prejudice and ignorance.

I very much doubt that history will judge David Davies' contribution to life in 21st century Wales in a very favourable light.
