A 1921 Wales international cap, awarded to footballer Moses Russell who later came to live and work in Chepstow, is set to fetch between £600 and £800 at an auction next week.
Set to go under the hammer on Tuesday 19th May, the green cap features an embroidered image of a red dragon and the date "1921", was one of twenty three Wales caps won by Russell.
He lived in Chepstow and worked at the Royal Propellant Factory before his death in December 1946, aged 58.
His 1921 Wales cap is coming up for sale at Graham Budd Auctions in London on Tuesday and the auction neatly coincides with the 127th anniversary the following day, of Russell's birth in Tredegar in 1888.
Moses Russell made three appearances for Wales in 1921. He played against Scotland at Pittodrie in Aberdeen on 12th February; against England at Ninian Park, Cardiff on 14th March; and against Ireland, at the Vetch Field in Swansea on 9th April.
Russell played for several clubs during his footballing career, including Merythr Town, Southport and Plymouth Argyle. He was part of the team when Merthyr won the South Wales and Monmouthshire FA Cup.
In their book "Who's Who Of Welsh International Soccer Players", Gareth Davies and Ian Garland recall that when Moses Russell toured Canada in 1929 with the Welsh party, he "was involved in a disturbing incident at Hamilton, Ontario.
"The match against the local eleven got a little rough and the crowd invaded the pitch to surround Russell.
"The unflappable Russell remained calm until one of the crowd drew a pistol. Fortunately the Mounties got their man before he could get to Moses."
