FOSTER Wales Monmouthshire is proud to highlight the vital role of short breaks carers in supporting foster carers and enriching the lives of children in care across the county.

Short breaks, also known as respite care, provide children in foster care with the opportunity to spend time with another approved foster carer for a night, a weekend, or a longer period.

These breaks offer a change of scenery, new experiences, and an opportunity for a child to build a relationship with a trusted adult.

For foster carers, a short break provides valuable time to recharge, maybe sort things out, or have a rest, so they can continue to provide the best possible environment for children they can care for.

Foster Wales Monmouthshire is calling on members of the community to consider becoming short break carers. These roles are flexible, rewarding, and supported by comphrensive training and guidance as well as generous allowances.

Cllr Ian Chandler, Cabinet Member for Social Care, Safeguarding and Accessible Health Services, said: “Short breaks foster carers can help carers maintain their wellbeing while giving children positive, nurturing experiences with other families. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

“We’re incredibly grateful to our short break carers. Their commitment helps us build a resilient fostering community where every child feels safe, supported, and valued.”

Over 190 children in Monmouthshire are currently in care. While the majority of these children live locally with loving foster carers, many are placed far away or in children’s home due to a shortage of foster carers homes. Foster Wales Monmouthshire is committed to recruiting more local foster carers, ensuring that children can stay close to their community, family, and friends.
