With Halloween and Bonfire Night just around the corner police in Monmouthshire and Torfaen are encouraging people to enjoy the traditions but also respect those around them who may choose to have a quieter evening. Building on the success of last years forcewide 'Pumpkin' campaign, Neighbourhood Officers throughout B division have been offering pumpkin shaped 'No Callers Please' signs to local residents to display in their windows. Posters have also been issued to schools asking potential trick or treaters to look out for and be respectful of members of their local community displaying the Gwent Police pumpkins and to retailers encouraging them not to sell flour or eggs to young people under the age of 18 in the lead up to Halloween. Linda Symes, Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer for Severnside Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We don't want to deter people from enjoying themselves and having fun but we want to send a clear message to people that they can do this and still be considerate to those who would prefer not to get involved by respecting the campaign and taking notice of the pumpkins displayed in windows." A poster campaign is also underway warning of firework-linked offences that Gwent Police will take action against. High visibility patrols across the division will increase during this period covering Halloween, half term and Bonfire Night. Marc Budden, Community Safety Inspector for B Division said; "The halloween and bonfire night campaigns encapsulate education and enforcement. Officers in Monmouthshire and Torfaen will be targetting underage drinking, illegal use of fireworks and anti-social behaviour during this period. "We wish everyone a happy halloween and enjoyable bonfire night but urge them to do it sensibly and stay safe."
