SIXTH Form Students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School put their investigative skills t the test during an exciting forensic science afternoon that brought together biology and criminology in a hands-on learning experience.
As part of the Monmouth Science Initiative, Year 12 A Level Criminology students were challenged to solve a fictional crime which had taken place in the School’s Biology Department. Taking on the role of forensic investigators, students gathered, analysed and interpretated evidence using a range of scientific techniques commonly employed in real-world forensic laboratories.
Throughout the afternoon, students developed practical laboratory skills while gaining a deeper understanding of biological science supports criminal investigations.
One of the key activities involved DNA fingerprinting where students carried out restriction digests and gel electrotrophoresis to compare DNA samples and identify potential suspects. They also investigated the ABO blood group system, exploring how blood typing can provide valuable forensic evidence.
Students further tested samples using luminol and leuco-crystal violet to determine the presence of blood, comparing the findings against positive and negative controls to ensure accuracy and reliability of their results.
The investigation extended beyond the laboratory bench, with students examining a variety of evidence types which forensic scientists may encounter during criminal enquiries.
Using a range of techniques, they collected and analysed fingerprints, learning how unique print patterns can link individuals to a crime scene. Hair and pollen samples were studied under microscopes, enabling students to identify key characteristics and appreciate the importance of trace evidence in forensic investigations.
Students also examined blood footprint evidence, interpretating patterns and considering what they could reveal about events at the scene.
Having gathered evidence from each stage of the investigation, students worked collaboratively to assess their findings and construct a case against the most likely suspect.
After the students evaluated the DNA evidence, blood analysis, fingerprints, trace samples and footprint evidence, the students concluded the suspect two was responsible for the crime.
The activity challenged students to think critically, communicate effectively and apply scientific reasoning to reach a well-supported conclusion.
The forensic science afternoon provided Haberdashers’ Monmouth School Sixth Form students with a valuable opportunity to experience the real-world application of both biology and criminology.
Throughout the event, students demonstrated outstanding professionalism, teamwork and enthusiasm, embracing the challenges of forensic investigation while developing practical scientific skills.
