THE installation of a Green Wall on the toilet block at the bottom of Monnow Street is attracting a lot of interest, and many favourable comments.
The unique installation, carried out by Monmouth Rotary Community Champions, consists of horizontal rows of window boxes, planted with a mixture of perennial and annual plants.
Plants were supplied by Morris’s of Usk, and when fully mature, they will cover a large part of the wall.
Norman William, representing the Rotary Community Champions, said: “We are very grateful to have received funding from Persimmon Homes, the Town Council and Viridor, to enable us to carry out this project. The installation certainly brightens up the dull magnolia paint finish that previously covered the wall. And it makes the entrance to the town over the old Monnow Bridge much more attractive.”
Such has been the support for the project, that plans are being prepared to apply for further funding, to enable the wall on the car park side of the building to be similarly covered with plants.
Monmouth Rotary Community Champions meet in the room at the rear of the Robin Hood pub on the last Thursday of each month at 6pm. The purpose of the group is to carry out simple improvements around the town in order to enhance the quality of life, and the environment, in which we all live. New members, and new ideas, are always welcome. For further details about the group, please contact Pete Walters on 01600 860399.
