THE final round of the National Mini Challenge Championships took place at Silverstone last weekend on the full Grand Prix circuit. The race was combined with 42 Mini Miglias and Mini Se7ens lining up together.
Wayne Grayer from Raglan, in his Newton Motors/Motorcare/ Skirrid Garage-sponsored Mini Miglia, qualified in 14th position from the Saturday afternoon session which took place in atrocious conditions. The Sunday race which started in bright sunny conditions saw him have an excellent start. By the end of the first lap, he was up to sixth position and challenging the leading carwhen contact was made with the car in front, causing damage to the steering which virtually forced him into the pit lane and out of the race.
Stuart Grayer from Raglan, in his SGE Motorsport entered Mini Se7en, also had race day problems. Having qualified in 13 position from the Saturday session, he started the race and as the cars were entering Stowe Corner (where Schumacher had his big accident) he was up to an amazing fourth position when he was tapped from behind, sending him spinning on to the wet grass and back on to the circuit into the side of another car.
This caused considerable damage to Stuart's car and, as with Wayne, forced him into the pit lane and out of the race.
With the season coming to a close, Wayne Grayer finished up in fifth position in the National Mini Miglia Championship table and his brother, Stuart ended up in sixth position in the National Mini Se7en Championship table.
To finish in the top ten of these closely fought championships is quite an achievement and signs look good for an all out attack on the championships for next season which starts in March/April 2001.
