Despite a postponement due to the inclement weather, a total of 77 members were in attendance for the rearranged annual general meeting of Monmouth Golf Club on February 12.
Ken Brown stood down after sterling work over seven years as President and Allan Johnston was elected in his stead. David Evans, the outgoing Captain, introduced his successor Wayne Wadley who, in turn, introduced his Vice Captain Anto Spary.
The Past Captains Tie and Tankard and The Captains and Vice Captains Ties were duly presented. Ladies Captain for 2009, Sylvia Oaten, presented the Ladies Spoon to Marion Workman, who was receiving it on behalf of Sue Edwards and then announced that her Vice Captain for 2009 would be Alison O'Doherty.
An election was held for the remaining ten places on the executive committee as there were more than ten nominations, those elected were Maurice Brain, David Crocker, Sue Edwards, David Evans, Dai Harries, Gwyn Richards, Nigel Ruck, Jack Spary, Martyn Taylor and Marion Workman.
David Evans reported his satisfaction that his year as Captain had been an excellent one for the Club, the highlight being the purchase of the previously leased land so that Monmouth Golf Club is now entirely owned by its members. David thanked all the staff and members who had supported and assisted him throughout the year, making special reference to the greens staff, who had earned praise from members and visitors alike for presenting the course in excellent condition throughout the year.
Outgoing Finance Chairman David Wedel reported on satisfactory accounts for the year ending March 08 with a healthy surplus of £9,000 being shown.
The current year, David admitted, was more of a struggle as the Club was not immune from the effects of the downturn in the economy. However, the Club had still managed to make several improvements to the course, the most notable being the construction of buggy tracks, now almost complete, which should increase the income from buggy hire in the future.
The Club had also been able to appoint Richard Ballard as PGA Professional after operating for many years without a full time pro. Richard was bringing considerable expertise to the Club and whilst the Club was to lose income from the shop, David was sure that this loss would be compensated by the extra visitors and members attracted to the Club by Richard's presence.
David concluded by stating that all the Club's committees were mindful of the need for prudence with regard to expenditure in the prevailing conditions but that there were plenty of reasons to be optimistic concerning the Club's future.
New President Allan Johnston thanked the two Davids for their excellent reports and for all their hard work on behalf of Monmouth Golf Club.
