IN SPITE of poor weather, the third annual golf competition for the Macmillan Cancer Support shield proved another very successful day. Over £2,200 was raised for the charity when eighty four competitors making up twenty one teams of four faced some heavy showers as they battled away round the Raglan Parc course on June l5th. The course was in tip-top condition and some excellent scores were achieved. Winners of the Shield were a visiting team from Derby, led by Dennis Wardle, who earlier had kindly contributed four bottles of whisky for the second team prize. His team chalked up a remarkable score, especially in view of the conditions, of 92 stableford points. Second, with 82 points, was a local team made up of John Murphy, Charles Reeve-Tucker, Jeremy Picton-Turbervill and David Warwick. Their points tally was boosted by a memorable eagle at the 10th hole ( a par five) by John Murphy, father of the Raglan Parc professional. In third place, with 81 points, was a Hereford team, led by Ron Davies, fund raising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, playing with Eamonn Croft, John Alexander and Richard Fletcher. The longest drive by a lady award went to Joyce Forrester, from Bristol, and the longest drive for men to John Brazier, from Cleobury Mortimer. Nearest the pin award was won by Steve Ford, providing some consolation for the teams from the Green Dragon Inn of Monmouth, winners of the Shield in the past two years. David Warwick also triumphed in the putting competition, with a very low score of l5 earning him a free Sunday lunch for two at the Glewstone Court hotel. Other sponsors were Waitrose Monmouth branch, the Old Court Hotel at Symonds Yat, Archenfield Insurance, Thomas Brown Electrical, Isaac and Rowland Dental Surgery, and the Symonds Yat Caravan Park. Chris Murphy, the Raglan Parc club professional, and his colleagues, notably Alex who provided an excellent buffet lunch, played a major part in making the day such a success. Nigel Price, the Raglan Parc club captain, kindly presented the prizes. He paid tribute to Sue Edwards for her tremendous efforts in organising the event helped by other members of the Symonds Yat and Monmouth Macmillan Cancer Support committee.
