This year's handicapped squash tournament was won by a rising star in Monmouth.
The finalists were Chris Hutchence (handicap –28) and George Evans (handicap –12). Chris won the spin and served first, winning the first couple of points.
George immediately hit back winning the next three points. The game continued in this fashion with the scoring being even throughout until George strung three points on the trot to take the first game 4/15.
The second game started off in similar fashion to the first but with Chris knowing he had to take more risks to combat George's fantastic retrieving and also knowing that he has to win two points to his opponents one, Chris began to pull ahead and looked like he would overhaul George to take the game.
However, a mistake by Chris when the score was 7/11 gave a tired looking George the impetus he needed to win 8/15.
George's tiredness seemed to disappear at the start of the third game and after some tremendous rallying from both players George began to creep ahead and now it was Chris who was looking tired.
Again, a tremendous amount of effort was put in by both players but there was a look of inevitability on Chris's' face as the sublime skills of this gifted fifteen year old proved too much for him and George went on to take the game 1/15 and win the match three games to nil.
It should be mentioned that although some of the game score lines make the match look very one sided it should not detract from the fact the whole match was played at a furious pace and a little more risk taking on Chris' part would have made the end result much closer.
George has improved tremendously over the summer months and there was no disgrace in Chris losing three nil. In fact George is going to be a star in the second team this season and it won't be long before he is a regular in the first team, so well done George.
