This game was not going to be one for the faint-hearted.
The pace was fast and furious, with Monmouth settling into an attacking mood. After only 10 minutes a well struck corner from S Dorrington was met by M Williams whose powerful header from the edge of the box flew into the roof of the net.
Monmouth should have pressed forward to build on the good start but instead they stayed back and allowed Liswery back into the game.
The back three of G Skipp, S Watkins and P Perrella held their ground and kept the opposition at bay with some courageous defending. S Keane in goal had very little to do but proved his agility by making a first class save just before half-time.
Wing backs S Dorrington and N Harris worked hard, encamped in their own half while the midfield of R Kennedy, S Wookey and A Davies had to be at their best to combat the advancing runs of the opposition.
Half-time came and the team felt like they had been in a battle. A few sharp words from the manager brought home to Monmouth their poor display of the last 25 minutes, putting them in a resolute frame of mind for the second half.
From the whistle Monmouth started to attack the Liswery goal. D Skipp came close to scoring but the opposition keeper made some fine saves.
On 65 minutes, M Williams was substituted after a crunching tackle and A Philpotts slotted into midfield, allowing S Wookey to push forward.
A fresh pair of legs in midfield gave the attacking play more venom. On one such surge forward Monmouth made the breakthrough. A header by G Skipp was picked up by Perrella who in turn sent D Skipp on a goalwards run, drawing two defenders to him. A pinpoint pass to Wookey saw him bend the ball around the advancing keeper to make the score 2-0 and secure another three points.
Monmouth must be pleased with their continuing improvement. The group of talented young and not so young players have now started to get into a team rather than playing as individuals.
A big "thank you" goes to all those supporters who braved the cold weather to watch the match.
