Monmouthshire's County Council's decision to introduce a new recycling service for the council will "open the door for fortnightly collections," a leading member of the council has claimed.

Phil Hobson, leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats and lead signatory to the call in, said: "The decision to chop the black box system will mean a more expensive system for residents and will result in a less 'green' answer to the huge question of recycling.

"We were never convinced of the financial plan for the new system."

He added: "The decision now opens the door to start withdrawing the weekly refusing collection from areas of the county, Chepstow and Caldicot probably being first during 2010.
