THE CHAPEL at Monmouth Cemetery is undergoing extensive restoration after receiving a £150,000 grant from the European Commission.
It is being restored by local contractors specialising in old buildings, who have been busy returning the stonework to its former glory.
When complete, the chapel will house a genealogy centre complete with an 'electronic portal' – a computer with specially designed software to allow members of the public to search for relatives buried at Monmouth Cemetery.
The cemetery was awarded the grant as part of the Rural Development Plan for Wales, following a successful bid by the Friends of Monmouth Cemetery.
