FOLLOWING the Gallipoli commemorations in the town, Chepstow Conservative Club held an ANZAC evening event, raising money for charity.

The club donated funds from the evening to the Royal British Legion and Armed Forces SSAFA.

Conservative Club chairman Rodney Welsh said: "As a result of our very successful Gallipoli night event we thought it right to donate to those organisations that continue to provide support for ex-Servicemen and their families.

"We therefore decided to donate to both the Royal British Legion and to SSAFA."

A cheque for £244 was presented to head of the Chepstow branch of the SSAFA, Commander Christopher Wilson.

Commander Wilson thanked the club for its generosity saying: "In every area of our land there are cases of ex-servicemen and their families experiencing hardship.

"In our area alone over 35 cases were supported by SSAFA in the last 12 months, with help for funeral expenses, stair lifts, mobility scooters, furniture and house repairs."

SSAFA will hold it's annual "Big Collection" on Tuesday, 12th May when servicemen and women of 1 Rifles and HMS Monmouth will help the local SSAFA volunteers collect funds to ensure that their work may continue.
