Monmouth Town are hoping to raise more than £3,000 for charity in memory of a club stalwart.

An England V Wales football match between the dads of young Kingfishers was played last Saturday (28th April) as a tribute to former youth coach Kevin Johnson, who lost his battle with cancer last month.

The match, which took place after the Kingfishers' draw against Dinas Powys, was kicked off by Mr Johnson's son Harry (pictured above) and children released balloons in the club's colours. Continued on Page 41

Mr Johnson had been instrumental in getting the annual event off the ground, raising thousands for St David's Hospice Care Foundation.

Sally Rees, the charity's fundraising manager for Monmouthshire, said: "What a superb event on Saturday, a fantastic tribute to Kevin who was the driving force in starting this event some four years ago.

"It was lovely to see so many of Kevin's friends and family present to share in this Memorial Match.

"We are so very grateful for the funds raised, which will help continue to provide our free services provided locally in Monmouth and throughout South East Wales.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved on the day, Morgy for his fabulous efforts in rallying the troops, the committee at the club, the volunteers on the day who made the event so enjoyable for those who attended while not forgetting the players who raised sponsorship."

England took the game by two goals to one, leaving the series at three matches to one in their favour.
