HEAVY rain in the early part of Monday morning brought more flooding to parts of Monmouth.

Wonastow Road, Watery Lane and the usual parts of the town prone to flooding found themselves under water again. The new housing development at Rockfield Road was cut off from Monmouth and motorists found themselves marooned.

Sgt Mike Gray of Monmouth Police appealed to drivers to use common-sense and not attempt to drive through flood water when they did not know how deep it was.

"A lot of effort is put into rescuing vehicles and people from flood water when they should know better," he said.

Residents of the area affected were angry that they were inconvenienced again - around the fifth time since the new estate was built.

"Nothing seems to be done," said one. "We have had enough."

Mrs Pat Lewis of Watery Lane said she had left her home at 8.30 am and it had taken nearly four hours to get back because of the flooding.

"This is happening once and sometimes twice a week now," she said. "We have lived here 39 years and for the first 30 years we did not have any problems getting in or out."

Monmouth Town Councillor Gary Witcombe, who is campaigning for a route to be opened to provide an alternative link between the area and the rest of the town has backed plans to extend the Link Road.

Mr Witcombe has launched a petition calling on the County Council to open up a route through Ash Lane as an emergency, but he said the Link Road suggestion was a good idea.

"I don't mind where the road goes, as long as there is a link," he said. "I think the Link Road suggestion is a really good idea. I will still be collecting signatures for my petition to put pressure on the County Council to provide an alternative.

"The residents of the new housing estate were told there would be a new road to give them access to the town. Where is it? We must keep up pressure on the County Council to solve this problem."
