Traders have spoken about the dangers of the junction of St James Street and Wyebridge Street in Monmouth after a car hit a building last week. A blue Hyundai I30 crashed into The Fat Cock & The Swan restaurant at about 9.30am last Wednesday (28th May). The driver, a middle-aged woman, was taken to hospital in a stable condition after firefighters used specialist equipment to free her from the car. The restaurant wall suffered considerable damage, but its owners were not surprised by the incident. "We've seen a lot of near-misses," said Jennifer Cock. "I always knew it was a dangerous road so it wasn't too much of a surprise that something like this happened." Co-owner Jackie Keeley said she was in the building at the time and heard "a large bang that echoed for a while afterwards." Neil Bell, owner of the Queen's Head pub, said: "The amount of cars I have seen driving the wrong way down this one-way street is frightening – it must be more than 50. "The signage around here simply isn't good enough. I've seen people skidding on the road before. "I have written to the council in the past and they put lines down on the road but it's not enough." Monmouthshire County Council's Head of Operations, Roger Hoggins said: "The junction of Wyebridge Street and St James Street is a busy junction and its design requires motorists to be attentive when approaching it. "At present, we are unaware of the cause of the recent accident at the junction – nevertheless I will ask colleagues to review signage approaching the junction and the adequacy of no entry signage entering Wyebridge Street." Matt Jones, fire service station manager, said: "We received a call saying a vehicle had crashed into the building. "Officers from Usk, Monmouth and specialists from Malpas were called to assist in the incident. "We were advised by USAR (urban search and rescue) who came along to check the structure of the building to make sure it was safe. "The woman was extricated from the car as was standard procedure. Although she was in a stable condition we wanted to make sure no further damage was done." A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We were called at 9.35am on 28th May to a report that a Hyundai I30 had collided with a restaurant on St James Street, Monmouth. "The road was closed while the vehicle was recovered and emergency services were in attendance where diversions put in place by local authority. "A female driver, the only person travelling in the car, received medical treatment at the scene for a cut leg and was transferred to Nevill Hall Hospital. "No one else was injured as a result of the collision."
