Smiths Auction Rooms in Newent are preparing their online catalogue for their auction on September 21 and 22.

The sale includes specialist sections for Oriental, watches and Clocks but also features a fantastic line up of fine jewellery and silver which has arrived by chance from a variety of sources.

Top highlight of the sale is a very fine three stone diamond ring with a total diamond weight of 2.5 carats which has been estimated at £7,000 to £9,000.

Although this may seem steep, a ring of this size and quality would cost over £20,000 on the high street, since jewellery shop margins are very high.

A selection of other beautiful rings includes a step cut solitaire diamond ring of exceptional colour and clarity which is estimated at £3,000/£5,000.

It would make a perfect engagement ring and comes with an FGA diamond certificate which grades it’s 1.06 carats as F colour and VVS1 for clarity.

Interestingly these rectangular clear cut stones have to be of a higher quality as there is nowhere for any flaws to be hidden. Whereas in a brilliant cut circular stone a bit of clever cutting can go a long way to conceal minor problems.

A full range of other rings in the sale includes an unusual Art Deco style pink and yellow topaz ring estimated at £500/£700 and a wide selection of other diamond and coloured stone rings estimated from £30 to £3,000.

With the fully illustrated catalogue available a week before the sale it can’t do any harm to try a little online window shopping!

The watch section of the sale includes a good selection of classic vintage gentlemen’s wrist watches which is one of the most sought-after collectables in the current auction market. With many men taking an interest in watches it could be the perfect opportunity to buy now, giving plenty of opportunity to get it fully serviced and cleaned in time for Christmas.

A selection of ladies wrist watches includes a stainless steel Rolex Oyster Datejust watch estimated at just £2,000/£3,000.

The silver section of the sale is surprisingly extensive and includes a large collection of photograph frames, as well as perfume bottles and small collectables such as vesta cases and caddy spoons.

Of particular note is a selection of good quality Scottish silver, a 17th century spoon with trifid terminal estimated at £100/£150 and three silver bullion bars estimated at £600/£800 each.

The collectables section includes a range of good quality items such as a rare ‘erotic metamorphic’ small bronze would have been a bit of a novelty, but perhaps not to everyone’s taste these days!

The demurely dressed lady wears a gown which can be opened up to reveal a cheeky nude – highly collectable she is estimated at £300/£500.

Other collectables include an early 19th century Bristol policeman’s truncheon for Yatton West estimated at £180/£250 whilst a mahogany cased Fuller’s calculator has a label which boasts ‘Stanley – Everything for the Architect, Engineer and Surveyor’.

A rare British Rail double arrow engine logo is bound to attract train enthusiasts, especially as it comes with a certificate from the Tinsley Depot in Shefield from where it was removed.

The sale also includes a range of vintage fashion, postcards, coins, ceramics, stamps and a good selection of antique furniture including a good selection of early oak and country furniture.

An attractive set of eight French dining chairs is estimated at just £300/£500 whilst a superb quality Bryn Hall oak dining table and eight country rush seated chairs are estimated at £300/£500 each.

Other country furniture includes a Georgian Welsh dresser and a 17th century low dresser, both estimated at £300/£500.

Smiths Auction Rooms are open for viewing on September 19 and 20 between 10am-5pm and on the morning of the sales 9am-10am and the fully illustrated catalogue can be found online from Friday (September 15) at www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk
