A cyclist who died following a collision involving a van on Tuesday night (9th July) has been described as "quick witted, sensitive and gentle" by his family.
Ben Carroll (26) from Cardiff, another cyclist and a van were involved in a collision on the Old Raglan Road (A40) between the Steelhorse Cafe and the Hardwick Roundabout at about 8.50pm.
It occurred as the cyclists were racing in the Abergavenny Festival of Cycling handicap race and the van was travelling in the opposite direction.
Mr Carroll, a member of the Cardiff Ajax cycling club, was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital and later died of his injuries.
His family have since made the following statement: "He was the oak tree at the centre of all his friends; tall, strong and dependable.
"He always went out of his way for his friends and family.
"Everyone would gather at his base, for social events, parties and sports.
"He always strived to be the best at what he loved, be it biking or climbing.
"Lived life to the full and wasn't afraid to try anything new.
"A fantastic caring son, brother, grandson and friend. Our lovely big boy Ben.
"Quick witted, sensitive and gentle.
"Ben died doing exactly what he loved and wanted to be doing – racing his road bike. Wear the yellow jersey for us Ben, you'll always be our race leader."
An inquest into Mr Carroll's death was opened on 15th July.
A 33-year-old male cyclist from Abertillery received minor injuries.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and contact them on 101 and quote log number 576 9/7/13.
