SIR, When I first heard of councillors not being able to put elected titles to their names I could not believe it. Now according to Charles Boase' recent letters, Eric Pickles, communications minister for local government, has re-iterated that we still have freedom of speech in this country. National association of local councils advice is just guidance for said councils. Strength to all councillors who have the courage to speak out even if it's in a personal capacity, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I support Charles Boase' letters and respect Councillor Chivers' stance. If democracy is lost what is left? The council official was rebuked by the council for going public, they have probably forgotten who employs them. East End Life council newsletter was also blasted by MP Eric Pickles, probably not allowed with rate payers' money. Sylvia Gilbert (Monmouth)
