From next month, a five kilometre stretch of the Redbrook Road to Bigsweir Bridge will be completely closed for approximately eight weeks to make the road safe from rockfall.
From the 5th May, Gloucester Highways will be undertaking essential safety works along the A466 following significant rock falls in December 2024 and again January 2026.
The road has had a history of closure from slope instability.
In 2001 the road was closed for a period of time following a landslip after heavy rain on the corner just before The Florence Hotel and again closed for two months between September and December 3 in 2018 due to embankment works and was one of the most significant closures in recent times.
Significant disruption will be caused to commuters and residents and bus routes have been altered to accommodate the road closure.
Bus route 69 will be one of those affected by the closure of the A466 between Bigsweir Bridge and Redbrook. There will be a clearly marked temporary bus stop near the corner of Redbrook Road and Newland Road. The stop at the Bell Inn, and the stops on the rural section between Redbrook and Bigsweir Bridge cannot be served. Newport Bus and MCC will put up publicity in the vehicles, at the bus stations and other key places.
Keep up to date with road diversions in the Beacon.
