Smiths Auctions in Newent have over 1200 lots in their forthcoming antiques and collectables sale on September 29 & 30.
The sale includes a huge variety of items including ceramics, glass, silver, jewellery, furniture, pictures and collectables as well as a large section of stamps.
Viewing takes place today Wednesday September 28 10am-5pm as well as on the morning of the sales 9am-10am.
The Thursday sale begins with the ceramics and glass section which includes a good selection of Moorcroft pottery as well as a range of Victorian and later decorative ceramics.
A beautiful 20th century Worcester tea cup and saucer painted fruit and displayed in it’s original box is estimated at £200/£400 whilst in contrast an 18th century rare polychrome tea cup represents one of it’s earliest periods but, sadly due to damage, is expected to make just £20/£30.
The section also includes a brightly coloured selection of Art Deco wares by Shelley and Clarice Cliff as well as a large variety of pretty vintage tea wares and fine porcelain dinner services.
Most people would not consider buying a dinner service second hand but actually this can be a great way to buy good quality dinner ware at a tiny fraction of the price one would pay in the shops.
Good quality dinner ware does not scratch, stain or break in the same way as cheaper imitations.
One of the most exciting parts of the sale is going to be the jewellery section which includes a fantastic selection of fine diamond and attractive coloured stone jewellery as well as costume and silver jewellery.
The jewellery is often contested by savvy local buyers as well as dealers who are beginning to stock up ready for the Christmas season.
Private buyers enjoy coming to the sales each month to browse through the cabinets looking for something which catches their eye or alternatively they browse the online catalogue which features multiple close up photographs of many of the lots.
This will be followed by the ever popular watch section which attracts strong bidding from online specialist dealers as well as private buyers and watch enthusiasts.
Day two of the sale starts off with the stamp section featuring a good range of GB, World and Commonwealth stamps.
Highlights include a very rare and early Canada 1857 ‘Jacques Cartier’ 10d blue estimated at £200/£400 and a Postal Union Congress 1929 £1 stamp estimated at £180/£250.
This is then followed by the book section which includes a rare complete set of the first three years of The Eagle comic 1950 to 1952 estimated at £400/£600.
The vendor’s mother had the unusual forethought to have the magazines sent away and bound - hence their immaculate condition, and this is what makes them so exceptional.
It is often everyday items in good condition, that most people have thrown away, which can turn out to be the most collectable pieces that buyers are happy to pay the highest prices for.
For example, a charming suffragette pin brooch on it’s original cardboard mount (pictured below) is bound to attract significant attention even though it would have been a cheap ‘throwaway’ trinket of it’s time.
The sale also features a good range of antique furniture, paintings and collectables including toys and textiles.
A beautiful 1920’s black long lace evening jacket would make a fabulous addition to a party outfit and is estimated at £60/£80.
Whilst a selection of charming vintage eiderdowns, antique buttons, dress trims and a stylish Art Deco carved milliners head will all attract collectors both local and online.
The toy section includes a rather strange and unattractive looking ‘George’ doll made by Chad Valley. He was designed after the cartoon character ‘George’ from the very popular Tom Webster sporting cartoons that appeared in the London Daily Mail in the 1920’s.
Webster was incredibly popular in his time and one of the highest paid cartoonists in the world.
The doll is very rare and is estimated at £80/£120 but may well make far more.
Smiths Auctions are inviting good quality antiques and collectables for their forthcoming November sale including a special section for silver, gold and jewellery.
