A CHANCE for older people to improve their strength and boost their confidence is coming to Chepstow this Friday (20th May).

Elderfit, a not for profit organisation, is starting a class in Bulwark to help reduce falls through strength and balance exercises.

The community interest company was set up three years ago to build confidence in the elderly, reduce loneliness, reduce the risk of falls and aid general fitness.

Elderfit has received backing from Public Health Wales, Ageing Well Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government and the National Lottery.

The initiative has been running successfully in Cardiff and is now branching out to Bulwark Community Centre.

Elderfit was started by friends Gareth Bartlett and Tom Scaife who have been in the fitness industry for 15 years each. The pair set up the class after they found a mutual passion in helping older people increase their physical abilities.

The classes draw on techniques which include using resistance bands, hand and leg weights and mobility exercises. The moves are adapted accordingly to suit the needs of the individual.

The pair are now looking forward to bringing the lifeline to Tom’s hometown of Chepstow.

Tom said: “I’ve seen the benefits with my own eyes and find it so rewarding to see attendees discharged from physios, making news friends, increasing in confidence and having a better social life.”

The class is specifically designed for those who have a history of falling and are designed to increase strength and balance.

Elderfit runs from 9.30am to 10.30am on Fridays at Bulwark Community Centre. There’s no need to book in advance.
