DUBAI style chocolate has has gained a lot of public interest recently but concerns have been raised over some imported about the newfound delicacy, as imported Dubai-style chocolate which is being sold in the UK can be dangerous for people with certain food allergies.

Some imported Dubai-style chocolate might not be intended for the UK and could therefore lack full ingredients or allergies stated on the labels.

There are 14 regulated allergens in the UK and all foods sold here need to have them clearly labelled in bold on the packaging, but some of the chocolate intended for other countries has ended up on British shelves.

Even though there are many Dubai chocolates in the UK which are safe to eat, the foods standards agency has noticed products which shouldn’t have been imported for sale and may not meet the UK’s high safety standards.

Some of the products contain additives and colours which aren’t allowed in the UK market.

The FSA are working with the local authority to ensure a follow-up procedure is taken to protect consumers.

The FSA has acted on these imported food items and they have shared concerns with businesses and groups so they can be removed from shelves and different online marketplaces.

Here is what to look out for to check to see whether the product is intended for sale. The products should have labels in English which contain the following information:

  • The name of the product
  • A list of ingredients, with allergens stated
  • A best before or use by date
  • The name and address of the UK or EU business responsible for the product Information.

The Food Standards Agency are now surveying and sampling these products to work out how big the issue is. They are also working with allergy charities to help raise awareness of the risk with consumers.
