SIR, How I sympathise with Cannon Pain and his Churchwarden! The situation in St Mary's Churchyard seems to have become worse this year than ever before. The litter and the restricted entry to the church is extremely offputting and the paths through the churchyard are becoming dangerous to use at certain times of the day. Frankly, unless something is done some elderly person is going to meet with an accident here. One could ask where are our community police officers and the police in general - they must surely be aware that these problems exist. Why are they not doing something about this situation? There are more than enough regulations to cover the dropping of litter, abuse etc. One thing that could help the litter problem would be the installation of properly designed litter bins. The present bins are of dreadful design, ensuring that any litter that may be put in them will promptly blow out. If well designed bins were installed there might be a very slight chance of people using them. Remember as well where there is litter rats are not far behind. Sadly, in the present climate people have so little regard for the town in general. Things will not improve unless drastic action is taken. We moved to Monmouth in 1983 - what a lovely town it was then. Virtually litter free and the flowers were absolutely breathtaking. I shall never forget the square. Now what do we have - no flowers to speak of, litter everywhere and the down is becoming more and more down at heel. Wake up Monmouth! Wake up Town Council! Sue Campbell (The Buckholt).
