Sir,

Many of your readers may be thinking of getting involved in next year's referendum on the law-making powers of the National Assembly for Wales, which is due to take place on Thursday 3rd March 2011.

We'd like your readers to be aware that individuals and groups that intend to spend more than £10,000 campaigning at the referendum need to register as 'registered campaigners' with the Electoral Commission.

They also need to follow campaigning rules set out in law.

Democracy succeeds because people get involved like this; and we want everyone who gets involved to know the rules they need to follow.

That is why we have produced guidance for campaigners in this referendum, available on our website electoralcommission.org.uk

Once registered with the commission, campaigners can apply to be one of the designated lead organisations.

The commission will appoint these organisations to officially lead the respective 'yes' and 'no' campaigns.

Lead campaigners will be eligible for a referendum television broadcast, a freepost mailing to voters and an infrastructure grant of up to £70,000 from the Electoral Commission.
