A Monmouth businessman who owns property in Priory Street says that Welsh Water has refused to pay for repairing a sewage leak into the river.

Churchill Al Temimi says that the sewage waste from his properties in Priory St, and St. Mary's Priory Church has been seeping into the river at the former slaughterhouses for a number of years.

“Welsh Water has been charging water and sewage rates from the owners of all buildings but now the pipes from some buildings have been broken and the sewage waste is disposed of in the open ditch behind the museum,” he said.

“They are asking the owners of the buildings to repair the damage and redirect their sewage through the sewage pipe system. The owners of these buildings were told to pay the cost of repairs,” he added.

He went on to say that Welsh Water claims that the disposal of the sewage is the responsibility of the owners of the buildings and has nothing to do with the utility company.

He and his neighbours say that they had been charged for the sewage disposal “for as long as any owner of a building can remember.”
