MONMOUTH MP David Davies was a guest of Ladbrokes on Friday morning as part of a campaign to remove some of the perceptions that are held by people who have never visited a betting shop.
As well as meeting with Mark John, Area Manager of the Ladbrokes shop in Monnow Street, Mr Davies talked to members of staff.
"Thousands of people are employed in betting shops up and down the country but jobs are currently under threat from companies based primarily on the internet and offshore to avoid tax," said Mr Davies.
"I fully appreciate that betting is not everyone's cup of tea, although I must admit I like the occasional flutter on the horses. We are only talking a few pounds here and there and I treat it as a bit of harmless fun.
"During my visit, Ladbrokes' kindly gave me a £100 bet for charity. I split it on two horses, one of which came in a winner, and I will be halving my winnings between Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion.
"To be serious for a minute, three local soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan and organisations like Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion are doing a tremendous job in helping those who are left behind and those who come home injured.
"I am extremely grateful to Ladbrokes for allowing me to make a donation to these very worthwhile causes."
