GLOUCESTER-based 1 RIFLES soldier Danny Spender is getting set to complete the fearsome Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon.
Double amputee Colour Serjeant Danny Spender from 1 RIFLES and team mate CSjt Barry Welch (RIFLES) are attempting to beat records on the 125 mile race, held on 29th March.
CSjt Danny Spender lost both his legs in late August 2011 whilst serving with 1st Battalion The Rifles in Afghanistan.
Within seven weeks he was walking again and within one year he was climbing in Spain with 'Battle Back' on an expedition.
Danny is now teaming up with Barry Welch, undertaking the 125 miles by kayak, down the Kennet and Avon Canal and then the River Thames. A gruelling event, with 77 locks to negotiate.
In any physical condition, this is a challenge, but for Danny to undertake it is quite amazing.
Danny was serving with Barry in Afghanistan when he was injured and they have remained very close friends. They came up with the idea to try the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon as a way to challenge themselves but also to help raise money for The Rifles charity Care for Casualties http://www.carefor">www.carefor

The Rifles charity was set up by the regiment to help assist their casualties during their rehabilitation process. The Rifles have been serving in Iraq and Afghanistan virtually constantly since their formation on the 1st February 2007.
