Sir,

As a regular cyclist, I am delighted to see the cycle paths being installed by Sustrans through Drybridge Park and in Drybridge Street.

With the widened paths, there is room for pedestrians and cyclists to avoid each other, while being safe from cars. Provision for cyclists on the busy Drybridge Street will slow down cars, which is a good thing.

Many people complain constantly about lack of car parking space in Monmouth. I know that not everyone can ride a bike – the Osbaston hills are very steep, and the approach roads from outlying villages are potentially dangerous.

But, cycles take up a tiny amount of space compared to cars and do not use fuel. Many more people could cycle in and around Monmouth, and it is a pity that they don't. Cycling is so enjoyable.

I hope that when the "shared space" is introduced in Monnow Street, people will eventually realise that cars should no longer be the 'Kings of the road' in the town. All over Britain, cities are now investing millions of pounds on safer cycling (think Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and London), this is the way forward.

When all the Sustrans work is finished Monmouth will be a town that is welcoming to bikes, and thank goodness for that.

Penny Thomas
