SIR,
I would like to thank Mr Bowers for his letter in last week's Beacon which asked whether John Morgan's haul of eight for 38 could be a record for Monmouth Cricket Club.
It was a major talking point at our committee meeting last week and prompted me to dig out press cuttings from my 20-year involvement with the club.
While John Morgan's haul in 1961/62 was an exceptional return, it has been matched and even bettered by Simon Owens.
Simon no longer plays for the town but he took eight for 26 while playing for Monmouth Seconds against Builth Wells Seconds in a Marches League match in August 1994.
Simon also snapped up eight for 38 for Monmouth against Burghill and Tillington in a first-team Marches League match in May 1996.
On the batting front, Graham Hyde holds the club record individual score for a Monmouth Cricket Club player in league competition.
Graham retired from cricket several years ago but he made 166 not out for Monmouth Seconds at Builth Wells firsts in the opening league match of the 2005 season.
Rob Prewett holds the record for the highest individual score by a Monmouth batsman in a cup match.
Rob hit 164 not out at Woolhope in the Marches League Cup in June 2003.
I hope people enjoy reading our Monmouth Cricket Club reports in the Beacon.
We would like to thank all our sponsors and friends for their valuable support, and hope we can round off the season in a memorable fashion.
Ian Morgan
(Monmouth Cricket Club)
