SIR,

A letter last week was concerned that Monmouthshire County Council was lacking in its duty by not providing improvements to the buildings at Monmouth Comprehensive.

I hope I can add some comfort to that readers obvious concerns.

At a recent meeting of the planning committee, agreement was finally given for a new £20million building to house our esteemed councillors.

Despite operating in austere times, it is refreshing to see that our elected representatives have decided to offer some value.

I have no doubt the project will come in under the forecast cost and the residue budget can be used to give the portable buildings at Monmouth Comprehensive a good lick of paint.

In the same edition, the Beacon reported on a planning application in Dixton Road where, out of 11 [county] councillors who voted, six were abstentions.

This is an appalling situation.

We have voted for paid representatives to make decisions not to sit on the fence.

You could never run a successful business with such intransigence.

How many of the councillors who sit on committees are regularly recording an abstention when it comes to making decisions?

Next year will be election year for many of our councillors and this will be a great opportunity for us to really question them about their motivations and what they are doing to support the community rather than their own interests.
